PREFACE BY

THE HONORABLE JIMMY CARTER,
FORMER PRESEDENT,U.S.A

What is role of religion in helping to ameliorate strife in the modem world? Historically and currently, religious differences often have been a cause of conflict and warfare. While acknowledging this fact, the lives of some religious persons point in another direction. They show us by their actions that religion can be a potent moral force in encouraging the peaceful resolution of conflicts, both between nations and among opponents within national boundaries. The Reverend Toshio Miyake is such a person.

The religious character of Rev. Miyake's passion for peace is set forth in The Living of peace. The violent conflicts and injustices which afflict so many people in the world are recognized by him as an affront to human dignity and--in the final analysis--a denial of goodness itself. Peace making in contrast, is understood as a responsibility of the entire human family and as a difficult, sacred, and often painful task for the world's religions.

Recognizing that the mobilization of peace-promoting teachings in every religion is essential for the establishment of peace, Rev. Miyake helped to pioneer numerous cooperative peace initiatives among fellow religionist. Together with a bold group of religious leaders in Japan and around the world he was instrumental in the establishment of the World Conference on Religion and Peace (WCRP), an international multi-religious organization dedicated to cooperation among the world's for peace.

As a president of WCRP, Rev. Miyake has been a leading force in undertaking religious actions which address the resolution of conflict, disarmament, peace education, human rights, the protection of children, refugees, development, and the protection of the environment. His efforts for peace have been as indefatigable as they have been encompassing.

Rev. Miyake's passion for peace can instruct us all on the power of a caring, single-minded commitment rooted in hope. His life personifies the human dignity to which he has committed himself.
